Books have been around since the 3rd Millennium BC where people were writing on clay tablets. They have evolved overtime from clay tablets, scrolls, papyrus to hand binded books, contemporary books and now Ebooks.
The idea of books was to write down one’s knowledge of something they know through experience and to share it with others. This is still true today. Now, someone can learn anything they want on any topic through books. It’s pretty amazing if you think about it. While you can read a book on any topic under the sun in today’s modern world it’s what you do with that knowledge and apply it to your life.
74% of Americans have stated they have read at least one book in the past year. Of that 74% most Americans read an average of 4-12 books a year depending on their demographics.
What types of books are people reading?
While you might hear a lot of people talking about fictional books where they can escape into a fantasy, the genre of books that is most on the rise is self-help books. More people today are looking for ways to compression the learning gap, find a solutions and look for advice from experts instead of reading a fictional books where someone can detach themselves from their everyday life and get lost in a book. While most places don’t have a category titled “self-help” this broad genre can include biographies, physiological, business, financial and many other titles.
Why are people reading these books?
Life can be difficult without a good mentor, as we all know, life doesn’t always go as planned, things pop up that you can’t control. You might need some help or answers from someone other than your family and friends to discover a new solution to your problem. Your interest might be relationships, family problems, health issues, dieting, business, finances or depression. Books can give you another look at your present for future challenges from someone else who has already been through the experience and how they were able to overcome it.
How else can books be powerful?
- Get you to take action
People can give you advice all day long but will you succeed if you don’t take action? Absolutely not! You will fail every time! Books show you the path that others have taken, so if you are wondering what is ahead, you have a road map! You have to want to do something though. Like Shia Lebouf said “Just Do It”
- Point you down the right path
Sometimes life just gets the better of you and you feel like you have to start all over again but you don’t know where to begin. Maybe you get fired from your job, you go through a divorce, you lose a loved one. It is not always easy to maintain a Positive Mental Attitude, books can be a great resource to help you figure out the strategies to move forward and what path is the right one for you to go down.
- Push you out of your comfort zone
Generally speaking, human beings strive for comfort. We tend to like things the way they are even if it doesn’t work for us. Books can help you understand the techniques to break your habit of being comfortable and try new ways to better situation by doing something you might be afraid of. If you’re an introvert try talking to others, if you fear rejection throw out a pitch even if they say no there is always something to learn about yourself by getting out of your comfort zone.
- They can inspire you
There is something especially motivating about reading how someone who went through a similar hard time as you, hit rock bottom, thought about giving up but persevered anyway! I love when a book is able to tell someone to make a change, take an action, get out of your comfort zone and the results are success.
